This is a translation of my latest news-summary on the Case of Marwa el-Sherbiny’s murder in Dresden.

A lot of new articles and statements appeared on the murder of Marwa in Dresden during the weekend. I try to summarize:

Marwas husband, Elwie Okaz, woke up from his coma on Friday. His condition is stable, but he still has to stay at the hospital.

Both secretary generals of the German Jewish and Muslim Central Council (Stephan Kramer and Aiman Mazyek) visited Marwa’s Husband today. Kramer is quoted as follows:

“We want to send a signal against Islamophobia”, says Kramer. “A lot of Muslims are afraid and we cannot ignore this.” The reactions on the case so far are “absurdly meager”. (Source: TAZ)

A meeting is scheduled between both secretary generals and the Saxon prime minister (CDU).

A mourner’s prayer took place at Berlin Dar el-Salam Mosque. The Egyptian ambassador, Ramzi Ezzeldin Ramzi, and the victim’s brother participated. The victim’s body was brought to Egypt in the evening, the German ambassador to Egypt Bernd Erbel was present at the airport among others.

In a short address he pointed out, that the headscarve is not forbidden in Germany and the the murder is condemned by the German people. The diplomat explained that the 3 million Muslims in Germany enjoy all kinds of freedom and that the German nation is not hostile towards muslims. (Quelle: al-Sharq)

Today, the burial of Marwa el-Sherbiny took place in Alexandria, Egypt. Al-Jazeera reports, that the German embassy in Cairo announced, that this crime doesn’t reflect the general attitude towards Muslims. Sulaiman Wilms, chief editor of the Islamic Newspaper, utters his partial disagreement in the same articlesaying that this incident reveals the resentments that Muslims are confronted with in Europe.

The Intercultural Council spoke out for for public demonstration of solidarity with the victims of the sćrime, especially from political stakeholder. This would demonstrate the attitude of the majority of the German people, who condemn anti-islamic racism.

Peter Widmann of the Institute for Research on Antisemitism at Berlin Technical University expresses his viewpoint in the daily TAZ:

“If it’s true, what the media reports, this was obviously an anti-islamic attack”, says Peter Widmann, who is a researcher on islamophobia at the Centre for Research on Antisemitism.

“This assault was probably mentally prepared through a hate-scene in the internet and through problemtatic tendencies among certain intellectuals, which have a place in mainstream society”, said the scienist Widmann. Anyhow, the topic is barely discussed in public until now.

“This is”, according to Widman, “in part because of the “widespread discomfort over Islam” well into the middle of German society.” “Furthermore there is an insecurity about what is legitimate critique and where an enemy stereotype begins. From my point of view this is petty simple though: ceriticism is legitimate, whenever it is directed at a specific individual or organisation, but it is not, when a collective character is assumed. Since now rumours and outbursts of of anger have started to circulate, I want to comment some of these.

In different paces on the net I read about a rumour, that the charge against Marwa’s murderer is be manslaughter – and not murder. Fact is that the charge is not yet filed. The police investigate for malicious murder on behest of the prosecuting attorney. After Investigation are closed the charge will be filed – most probably for malicious murder.

I have heard all kinds of accusation against the German state. I have to say that, at least that part of the German state that is represented in this case by the prosecuting attorney Christian Avenarius and the judge has been operating well. This may sound surprising to some, but I want to put to record that the first sentence affirmed the criminal offence of discrimination and racism and punished it. Furthermore, the prosecuting attorney filed the follow-up suit against Alex W., because of his insisting and continuing harassment of Marwa during the first trial, that would have probably ended in a prison sentence. Furthermore the prosecuting attorney is investigating the behavior of the policeman, who accidental shot Marwa’s husband while he was trying to protect her. this investigation should verify if his behaviour is of criminal relevance. Of course I see a big responsibility for the increasing anti-islamic and racist atmosphere in this society on the side of politicians and public personalities as I noted elsewhere.

Über das Wochenende sind wieder viele Berichte und Stellungnahmen zu dem Mord an Marwa in Dresden zusammengekommen. Ich fasse zusammen:

Marwas Ehemann, Elwie Okaz, ist seit Freitag aus dem Koma erwacht und in stabilem Zustand, liegt aber weiterhin im Krankenhaus in Dresden.

Der Generalsekretär des Zentralrats der Juden in Deutschland, Stephan Kramer, hat zusammen mit Aiman Mazyek vom Zentralrat der Muslime den Ehemann der Getöteten besucht. Kramer zu seiner Motivation:

“Wir wollen ein deutliches Zeichen gegen Islamophobie setzen”, sagte Kramer. “Viele Muslime haben Angst und das dürfen wir nicht ignorieren.” Die bisherigen Reaktionen auf den Fall seien “unverständlich spärlich”. (Quelle: TAZ)

Am heutigen Abend ist ein Treffen der beiden Generalsekretäre mit dem sächsischen Ministerpräsidenten Stanislaw Tillich (CDU) geplant.

Am Sonntag fand ein Totengebet in der Berliner Dar el-Salam Moschee statt, an der auch der ägyptische Botschafter, Ramzi Ezzeldin Ramzi, und der Bruder der Ermordeten, Tariq El-Sherbiny, teilnahmen. Daraufhin wurde der Leichnam von ihrem Bruder nach Ägypten gebracht. Am Flughafen in Kairo nahm ihn u.a. auch der deutsche Botschafter Bernd Erbel in Empfang.

Er verwies in einer kurzen Ansprache darauf, dass das Kopftuch in Deutschland nicht verboten sei und der Mord vom deutschen Volk verurteilt werde. Der Diplomat erklärte, dass die 3 Millionen in Deutschland lebenden Muslime alle Freiheiten genießen und und das deutsche Volk den Muslimen nicht feindlich gegenüberstehe. (Quelle: al-Sharq)

Heute fand die Beerdigung von Marwa in Alexandria, Ägypten, statt. Al-Jazeera berichtet, dass die deutsche Botschaft in Ägypten verlauten ließ, dass diese Tat nicht die allgemeine Haltung gegenüber Muslimen reflektiere. Sulaiman Wilms von der Islamischen Zeitung, widerspricht im selben Artikel dieser Aussage teilweise, indem er sagt, dass dieser Vorfall die Ressentiments deutlich mache, mit denen Muslime in Europa konfrontiert seien.

Der Interkulturelle Rat hat sich in seiner Pressemitteilung dafür ausgesprochen, dass es besonders von politischer Seite Solidaritätsbekundungen mit den Opfern geben sollte, da die Haltung der Mehrheit der Menschen in Deutschland reflektieren würde, die antimuslimischen Rassismus ablehnen.

Peter Widmann von Institut für Antisemitismusforschung äußert sich zu de Fall in der TAZ:

“Falls es stimmt, was die Medien schreiben, war es ganz offensichtlich ein islamfeindlicher Anschlag”, sagte Peter Widmann, der am Zentrum für Antisemitismusforschung zu Islamophobie forscht.

“Dieser Anschlag wurde möglicherweise atmosphärisch durch eine Hassszene im Internet vorbereitet und durch problematische Tendenzen unter bestimmten Intellektuellen, die bis in die Mitte der Gesellschaft reichen”, sagte Wissenschaftler Widmann. Dennoch würde das Thema Islamfeindlichkeit in der Öffentlichkeit bislang kaum diskutiert.

Das liege, so Widmann, zum einen an einem “verbreiteten Unbehagen über den Islam” bis in die gesellschaftliche Mitte hinein. “Zudem gibt es Unsicherheit darüber, was legitime Kritik ist und wo ein Feindbild beginnt”, sagte Widmann. Aus seiner Sicht ist das aber einfach: Legitim sei Kritik immer, wenn sie sich an konkrete Personen oder Organisationen richtet, nicht aber, wenn ein Kollektivcharakter angenommen werde. Da nun ja diverse Gerüchte und Wutausbrüche die Runde machen, noch ein paar Anmerkungen von mir. Ich habe des öfteren gelesen, dass Leute sich in Foren, bei Twitter usw. darüber aufregen, dass die Anklage gegen Marwas Mörder auf Totschlag – nicht auf Mord – lauten solle. Das ist nicht wahr, aus dem einfachen Grund, weil noch gar keine Anklage erhoben wurde. Noch laufen die Ermittlungen laut einem Bericht der “Welt” wegen heimtückischen Mord. Eine Anklage wird dann aufgrund der Ermittlungsergebnisse erhoben.

Weiterhin habe ich des öfteren Vorwürfe gegen den deutschen Staat vernommen. Ich muss sagen, dass zumindest der Teil des deutschen Staates, der in diesem Fall durch den Dresdner Staatsanwalt und den Richter repräsentiert wird, gut funktioniert hat. Das mag vielleicht einige überraschen, allerdings muss festgehalten werden, dass durch das erste Gerichtsurteil der Tatbestand der Diskriminierung und des Rassismus festgestellt und bestraft wurde. Die Staatsanwaltschaft kam sogar zu der Auffassung, dass aufgrund der wiederholten Beleidigungen des Alex W. vor Gericht eine Revision angestrebt werden müsste, die möglicherweise eine Freiheitsstrafe nach sich gezogen hätte. Natürlich sehe ich auch eine Verantwortung für eine zunehmend islamfeindliche Stimmung in der Gesellschaft seitens Persönlichkeiten der Politik und Gesellschaft, wie ich an anderer Stelle schon erwähnt habe.
